A katari labdarúgó-világbajnokság döntőjében a címvédő francia válogatott több mint egy órán keresztül kapura sem lőtt az argentin csapat ellen. Az első félidőben Lionel Messi történelmi 11-es gólt lőtt, majd Ángel Di Maria növelte a dél-amerikai csapat előnyét, és úgy tűnt, ez lesz minden idők egyik legsimább vb-döntője. A második félidő hajrájában aztán a franciák Kylian Mbappé tizenegyesével szépíteni tudtak, majd másfél perccel később Mbappé lőtt egy csodagólt, ezzel pedig hosszabbításra mentette a meccset.
A ráadásban a hétszeres aranylabdás Messi ismét előnyhöz juttatta Argentínát, azonban egy újabb tizenegyessel Mbappé kiegyenlített, így a találkozó 3-3-as végeredménnyel zárult. A tizenegyespárbajban aztán a franciák kétszer is megremegtek, míg az argentinok négy tizenegyest belőttek, ezzel a dél-amerikai csapat története során harmadszor lett világbajnok.
A találkozó előtt már tudni lehetett, hogy akár az argentin, akár a francia válogatott diadalmaskodik a fináléban, a győztes harmadszor foglalhatja el a futballvilág trónját.
A döntő egyik legnagyobb kérdése az volt, hogy Lionel Messi, a dél-amerikai együttes csapatkapitánya megkoronázza-e páratlan pályafutását a világbajnoki aranyéremmel, amelynek megszerzésére másodjára lesz lehetősége a 2014-es, a németek elleni vesztes finálé után.
A francia válogatott a sírból hozta vissza a meccset az Argentína elleni vb-döntőben, ugyanis kétgólos hátrányban Kylian Mbappé a hajrában 97 másodperc alatt lőtt két gólt, ezzel hosszabbításra mentve a meccset. Érdekesség, hogy legutóbb a brazil Ronaldo tudott duplázni vb-döntőben.
A PSG francia sztárja először a 80. percben szépített tizenegyesből, majd másfél perccel később jobbal lőtt a bal alsó sarokba 14 méterről.
Argentína végül 3–3-as döntetlent követően tizenegyesekkel (4–2) legyőzte Franciaországot a katari labdarúgó-világbajnokság vasárnap esti döntőjében.
